Jerusalem "Shabbat" Conflict Continues With Pop-Up Coffee Stand

A new phase in the "Shabbat" conflict in Jerusalem has emerged following the closure of the "Ba-Simta" cafe, which had been operating on Saturdays. After succumbing to pressure from ultra-Orthodox demonstrators, the cafe ceased its weekend operations. In response, activists from the "Awakening in Jerusalem" movement established their own temporary coffee kiosk next to the closed establishment.

Municipal inspectors arrived at the protest site and demanded the stall be dismantled, reportedly giving the activists ten minutes to comply. The inspectors stated they had "instructions from above" but did not specify the source of the order. Activists characterized the inspectors' actions as a dismantling of their protest and an infringement on freedom of expression, arguing the municipality should have exercised discretion, especially given the stall's location in a side alley.

Despite the inspectors' demands, dozens of Jerusalem residents gathered around the pop-up stand before it was closed. Organizers stated the action demonstrated that the cafe's closure had not resolved the broader dispute over the nature of public space in the Israeli capital on Saturdays. Deputy Mayor and head of "Awakening," Adir Schwartz, commented, "Violence may have been able to close the cafe door, but it will not be able to close Jerusalem."

The "Ba-Simta" cafe became a focal point for debates about secularism in Jerusalem after opening this spring. It faced weekly protests from ultra-Orthodox groups, including attempts to block entry and an incident where glue was used to jam the lock, delaying an opening by 40 minutes. The cafe's management announced its decision to close on Saturdays this week, citing a desire to reduce tension and restore a peaceful atmosphere. However, the move has shifted the conflict to a new venue, highlighting the ongoing struggle over public life regulations in Jerusalem.
