Israel's Ambassador Tackles Fake News Targeting Tourists in Thailand

Israel's Ambassador to Thailand, Dr. Orna Fisher-Kam, has met with the Commissioner of Thailand's Central Investigation Bureau, Pol. Maj. Gen. Nathathas Chaiyanasit, to combat a surge of fake news and disinformation targeting Israeli tourists online. The discussions focused on legal measures and investigative methods to counter the spread of false narratives that could negatively impact the Israeli community and tourists in Thailand.

The Israeli Embassy emphasized its commitment to promoting accurate information and collaborating with Thai authorities to encourage responsible information consumption. This initiative comes amid a wave of fabricated accusations against Israeli tourists circulating on Thai social media, often accompanied by outdated videos or unflattering footage of tourists from other nationalities falsely attributed to Israelis.

While some incidents do involve Israeli tourists, many recent viral posts have been misleading. One widely shared video depicted a group allegedly leaving a restaurant in Patong, Phuket, without paying for an 8,000 baht bill. However, a police investigation revealed the group consisted of a Saudi man and three Moroccan women, not Israelis.

Another incident involved a verbal altercation between a local phone shop owner and an Israeli couple, reportedly sparked by a "Free Palestine" flag displayed at the store. This video also gained significant traction online. The embassy aims to ensure that such misinformation does not create a distorted perception of Israeli tourists and to foster a more accurate understanding.
