Israel Embassy Tackles False Accusations Against Tourists in Thailand

The Israeli Ambassador to Thailand, Dr. Alon Fisher-Kam, has initiated efforts to combat the spread of false accusations and disinformation targeting Israeli tourists in the country. She met with a local police commissioner to discuss legal and investigative solutions for tackling fake news and videos that tarnish the image of Israeli travelers.

During the meeting, both sides exchanged views and explored legal avenues and investigative methods for addressing disinformation disseminated on social media. This online content has been creating a distorted public perception, negatively impacting the Israeli community and tourists.

The Israeli Embassy emphasized the critical importance of promoting accurate information and pledged cooperation with Thai authorities to ensure a responsible approach to news dissemination. Recently, Thailand's social media has seen a surge in false allegations against Israelis. Often, old footage or unflattering videos of tourists from other nationalities are falsely attributed to Israelis.

While some incidents do involve Israeli citizens, many cases are presented with misleading context, sparking online outrage. A prominent example involved a widely circulated video of a group of tourists clashing with restaurant staff in Patong, Phuket. Posts claimed they ordered food and drinks worth 8,000 baht and left without paying, identifying the group as Israelis. However, police investigations revealed that none of the individuals involved were Israeli; the group consisted of a Saudi Arabian man and three Moroccan women.

This fabricated story joined a growing list of false publications, though real videos featuring Israelis also appear online. One such recording captured a verbal altercation between a mobile phone shop owner and an Israeli couple over a "Free Palestine" flag displayed in the store, which also generated significant attention on Thai social media.
