Gilad Erdan Withdraws Unity Party from Knesset Race

Just before the deadline for list submissions, Gilad Erdan announced his party, "Unity," is withdrawing from the upcoming Knesset elections. The decision comes about a month after Erdan, along with Yuli Edelstein and Aliza Bloch, founded the party, aiming to bridge political divides and offer solutions to issues like the conscription law.

Erdan cited the party's struggle to gain traction in polls and its failure to secure a union with Benny Gantz's National Unity party as reasons for the withdrawal. In a statement, Erdan explained that while he believed the October 7th attacks necessitated a change in direction, public sentiment prioritized a clear decision on the prime minister's identity over a broad unity government. He also expressed concern that the party would not pass the electoral threshold, potentially wasting votes.

"Leadership is also about recognizing reality as it is and acting responsibly, and we must ensure our voters' voices are not wasted," Erdan stated. He thanked his fellow party leaders, including Edelstein, former Beit Shemesh Mayor Aliza Bloch, national judo coach Oren Smadja, and retired Brigadier General Hezi Nehama, and affirmed his continued commitment to public service despite exiting the current race.

Political analysts suggest Erdan's withdrawal could shift votes towards Gantz, the Likud, and other center-right parties, intensifying the competition for Unity's former supporters. Erdan himself indicated he would continue to work for the nation, its soldiers, and Israel's future.
