Gantz, Erdan Unity Talks Collapse Ahead of Deadline

Negotiations between Benny Gantz's National Unity Party and Gilad Erdan's Unity Party have concluded without an agreement, just days before the deadline for submitting electoral lists. Sources within the Unity Party accused National Unity of not being willing to "go all the way to unity to unite the bloc." Following another meeting between Gantz and Erdan, Gantz announced that the merger would not proceed. This decision comes shortly before the final date for parties to register their slates with the Central Elections Committee.

The Unity Party criticized National Unity's conduct during the talks, stating that "National Unity's briefings, immediately after Erdan left the meeting with Gantz, reveal more than anything who truly wanted unity and who only sought media prominence." They added, "We can only regret that National Unity never tried to discuss substantive issues, and did not agree to go all the way to unity to unite the bloc."

These statements followed confirmation that the latest meeting between Gantz and Erdan failed to yield any consensus. Just last Sunday, Unity Party member Yuval Steinitz expressed hope for the merger but admitted he could not guarantee it, emphasizing the urgency given the upcoming deadline. Steinitz had stated, "In a week we will have to submit lists to the Central Elections Committee. Both sides need to conclude that we are running together, I think this is a real necessity."

This outcome contrasts with a meeting the previous week, which was described as "positive" and conducted in a good spirit. At the conclusion of that earlier meeting, Gantz and Erdan agreed to maintain contact throughout the week, a process that ultimately ended in the failure of the unity talks.
