Gantz and Eitan's Unity Talks Collapse, Leaving Parties at Risk

Negotiations between Benny Gantz and Gilad Eitan aimed at forming a joint political alliance have collapsed following a recent meeting, Gantz announced. This breakdown comes as a stark contrast to the optimistic atmosphere surrounding the talks just days prior, leaving both parties in jeopardy of failing to pass the electoral threshold.

The Unity Party issued a sharp critique of Blue and White's conduct, suggesting that post-meeting leaks revealed who truly desired unity and who was primarily seeking media attention. The party asserted that Blue and White refused to discuss substantive issues and was unwilling to commit fully to unification.

Just last week, Gantz and Eitan met in a positive and cordial atmosphere, agreeing to maintain contact and explore the formation of working groups to discuss the merger details. Eitan had emphasized focusing on core principles and common ground rather than list placements, which he believed was more important to citizens seeking a broad unity government.

However, the failure of this broader unification attempt has now ended the Gantz-Eitan merger prospects. Both parties face significant political challenges, as current polls indicate neither would surpass the electoral threshold if running independently, and even a joint run doesn't guarantee Knesset entry.

Gantz, whose party is also at risk of not passing the threshold in some polls, has recently tried to project optimism, stating his party has a "public that just doesn't know it." The deadline for submitting party lists to the Knesset is approaching, forcing Gantz and Eitan to decide whether to run independently, seek alternative alliances, or withdraw from the race.

This collapse leaves the center bloc fragmented and diminishes the chances of forming a viable political alternative. Gantz had also recently engaged in intensive negotiations with Ayelet Shaked for a political union, which also failed to materialize, further contributing to the center's disarray.
