Israel Bans Fishing Off Ashkelon Coast Due to Algae Bloom
Israel's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has imposed a temporary ban on fishing off the coast of Ashkelon, extending to the border with the Gaza Strip. The restriction covers a maritime area up to ten kilometers west of the coastline and is effective until September 7, 2026. The decision was made by Dr. Sergio Dolev, acting director of the veterinary services, due to potential public health risks.
This measure follows cleanup operations in the sea necessitated by a significant proliferation of algae near local water desalination facilities. Specialists from the Ministry of Agriculture, in consultation with the Ministry of Health, determined the need for the ban. The ministry emphasized that all fish currently available in markets and for sale are safe for consumption.
