Record 260,000 Israelis Apply for Election Work

Israel is experiencing unprecedented public interest in temporary work for the upcoming 26th Knesset elections, scheduled for October 27, 2026. Approximately 260,000 Israelis have applied for positions as polling station secretaries and inspectors, a record number according to the Central Elections Committee. The committee plans to employ around 35,000 polling station secretaries and 14,000 inspectors, with a total of approximately 100,000 temporary staff expected for the voting process.

The surge in applicants has resulted in a competition ratio exceeding five candidates per position. Inspector roles saw a particularly notable increase in popularity, with about 55,000 applications, a 145% rise compared to the previous election's 22,400 applications for the same role.

All candidates must undergo a selection process that includes background checks, an online exam, an interview, and practical training. Key eligibility requirements are being of legal age, having completed at least 12 years of education, and not having been affiliated with a political party for the past three years.

Compensation for the temporary positions includes 2,700 to 3,000 shekels gross for secretaries and around 2,300 shekels for inspectors, with an 18% special tax deduction applied to these payments. The Central Elections Committee emphasized that submitting an application does not guarantee employment.
