Record 195,000 Israelis Apply to Be Polling Station Secretaries for 2026 Elections

Ahead of the 2026 elections, Israel's Central Elections Committee reported a record 195,000 applicants for the roles of polling station secretaries, nearly double the number from the previous election cycle. This surge marks the highest participation since the launch of the committee's digital registration system, which saw about 100,000 applicants in the 25th Knesset elections. The committee highlighted not only the unprecedented quantity but also the high quality of candidates, reflected in their strong average scores on the initial exam.

Despite the large number of applicants, only around 35,000 are expected to pass the rigorous selection process. Those who clear the initial screening will undergo comprehensive in-person training, followed by a personal interview and a final exam. Polling station secretaries hold critical responsibilities, including enforcing the committee's guidelines, managing the voting process on election day, and ensuring the integrity of the democratic procedure through to the completion of vote counting and protocol documentation.

Following the closure of secretary registrations, the committee is preparing to open applications for election integrity supervisors starting Wednesday, August 19. There are 14,000 paid positions available for these supervisors, whose role is to guarantee transparency and prevent fraud or bias at polling stations nationwide.
