Jerusalem Cafe to Close on Saturdays Amid Ultra-Orthodox Protests
After two months of protests and confrontations, the management of "Cafe Basemta," identified with Messianic Jews, announced it has decided to close its doors on Saturdays. The decision comes into effect this coming weekend.
The cafe has been the site of intense clashes every Saturday between its patrons and ultra-Orthodox demonstrators. The protesters expressed anger over the cafe's opening on the Sabbath and its association with Messianic Jews, a group viewed with hostility by many in the ultra-Orthodox community.
"The decision was made after prolonged deliberation and with a heavy heart, out of a desire to prevent and calm tensions and restore quiet to the cafe," stated the management.
"Cafe Basemta" is operated by the "Jews for Jesus" association, which unites Messianic Jews and has drawn significant ire from ultra-Orthodox elements, particularly the more extreme factions.
