Jerusalem Cafe to Close on Saturdays Amid Haredi Protests

A Jerusalem cafe, "Cafe Ba'Smalta," will cease operations on Saturdays starting this coming weekend, following approximately two months of persistent protests by the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) community. The cafe, operated by the organization "Jews for Jesus," had become a focal point for Haredi demonstrations due to its weekend opening hours.

The protests escalated into disturbances, including attempted break-ins and blocked entrances. In one incident, a woman was recorded pouring glue on the cafe's lock, delaying its opening by about 40 minutes. The cafe's management stated the decision to close on Saturdays was made after prolonged deliberation, with the aim of de-escalating tensions and restoring peace to the establishment.

Eli Birnbaum, CEO of "Jews for Jesus," described the decision as difficult and painful, stemming from a deep sense of responsibility towards their customers, their faith, and Israeli society. He noted that the cafe had become a site of friction and danger, which contradicted their identity as Jews who believe in Jesus and advocate for love, respect, and connection with others, even opponents.

Birnbaum expressed gratitude to the Israel Police, the Jerusalem Municipality, and supporters during the challenging period. He conveyed a desire for the cafe to return to its intended purpose as a calm, pleasant, and open space for coffee, culture, and dialogue.
