Israeli Firm Natural Intelligence Thrives in OpenAI's Rapidly Evolving Ad Market
Israeli digital advertising company Natural Intelligence has achieved significant success within OpenAI's burgeoning advertising ecosystem, reporting over $700 million in revenue for 2023, largely driven by its recommendation websites. The company, which conducts 85% of its operations in the United States, has established itself as a major player alongside giants like Google and Microsoft.
Six months ago, Natural Intelligence joined a closed beta program for OpenAI's ChatGPT, which included only 250 advertisers. The advertising landscape within AI tools is evolving at an unprecedented pace, with information quickly becoming outdated. This rapid change necessitates constant vigilance from advertisers.
Jonathan Idelsohn, CEO of Natural Intelligence, expressed surprise at the speed of development and improvement within OpenAI's platform. Initially skeptical about advertising within a chat interface, he now acknowledges its effectiveness. "It really works, and that's the drama," Idelsohn stated, highlighting OpenAI's swift delivery of features that build advertiser confidence and yield reasonable results for this early stage of the platform.
Natural Intelligence advertises across approximately 50 categories on ChatGPT, including streaming, auto insurance, and banking. The company has generated over 80 million impressions, with monthly budgets exceeding seven figures. They are particularly proud of becoming the largest financial advertiser on the platform, even securing a prominent billboard in New York's Times Square in late July.
Idelsohn believes that while advertising may not have been OpenAI's initial core strategy, it is a necessary revenue stream for a company with its operational costs. He anticipates significant growth in this sector, stating, "Advertisements are here to stay. It's a pretty effective model with significant money, and even if it's not at the core of the strategy, it helps sustain the strategic axes."
The advertising model involves users interacting with the chat, and after a few prompts, a relevant ad appears without the advertiser knowing the preceding conversation, thus preserving user privacy. The system relies on relevance, aiming for ads that are likely to lead to a transaction. Natural Intelligence has developed hundreds of ads to cover various user queries and segments, with ChatGPT selecting which ad to display. While advertisers don't always know why an ad was rejected, OpenAI has rules against overly vague or aggressive advertising.
The advertising model has been implemented in the US, Canada, the UK, India, and other select countries, recently expanding to the European Union. Natural Intelligence anticipates a global rollout, potentially including Israel, in the near future. The company's partnership with OpenAI was forged quickly due to its existing expertise in the field. Initially, the model was based on impressions, but it quickly transitioned to a pay-per-click system, with costs ranging from cents to tens of dollars per click, depending on the product's value, such as mortgages or business loans.
Currently, Natural Intelligence achieves conversion rates on ChatGPT that are about 60% of those on Google, though certain categories are still missing, and ads are limited to text. Idelsohn expects this to change soon. He notes that while the platform's monthly user base of one billion is an advantage, the company still lacks the detailed financial data on return on investment that it has accumulated from years of advertising on Google.
