Three Chinese EVs Earn Top Safety Ratings in European Crash Tests

The European safety organization Euro NCAP has released the results of its latest round of crash tests for four electric vehicles, with three Chinese-made cars achieving the highest possible score. The lone European model tested received a lower rating unless equipped with an optional safety package.

The Aiways U5, a compact electric hatchback set to launch in Israel in two weeks, earned a full five stars. It scored 66% in safe driving, 74% in accident avoidance, 91% in crash protection, and 88% in post-accident safety. Euro NCAP noted its reliance on a touchscreen interface and the absence of a child reminder system.

The Geely E2, another electric car slated for an Israeli release early next year, also secured five stars. Its scores were 79% for safe driving, 72% for accident avoidance, 86% for crash protection, and 95% for post-accident safety. The organization pointed out inconsistencies in its emergency braking system and noted that protection for the driver's legs was insufficient in certain tests, with a child dummy's seatbelt partially slipping.

The Leapmotor B05, a compact family car, also achieved a five-star rating. It received 66% for safe driving, 77% for accident avoidance, 92% for crash protection, and 89% for post-accident safety. Testers highlighted a lack of occupant detection and a preference for physical buttons over touchscreen controls.

The Cupra Raval, a small electric car, received four stars in its standard configuration, with scores of 58% in safe driving and 66% in accident avoidance. With an upgraded safety package, its safe driving score rose to 72% and accident avoidance to 77%. This model lacks a child reminder alert, and its chest protection in certain impacts was deemed marginal.

Additionally, Euro NCAP updated results for the Kia K4, which previously underwent Australian testing and now qualifies for four or five stars in Europe depending on its safety package. The Mercedes CLE convertible also received a top five-star rating, consistent with its coupe version tested previously.
