Jerusalem Cafe May Close Due to Sabbath Controversy and Protests

The "Jews for Jesus" organization is considering closing its "Cafe Alley" in Jerusalem on Saturdays following recent tensions and protests sparked by its weekend opening. The group's leadership is scheduled to meet this week to discuss the cafe's future and the possibility of shutting its doors on the Sabbath.

Eli Birnbaum, CEO of "Jews for Jesus," expressed surprise at the intensity of the reaction, stating they did not anticipate such a strong response to their decision. He noted that the cafe was consistently full of people, which was its intended purpose. Despite the protests, Birnbaum stated he does not hold anger towards the demonstrators, understanding the long-standing debate surrounding the Sabbath. He drew parallels to Jesus' teachings about doing good on the Sabbath, acknowledging the ongoing discussion.

Birnbaum also voiced concern over what he perceived as bullying from those who disagree with the cafe's operations, impacting businesses in Jerusalem. He emphasized a desire for respectful dialogue and mutual understanding, lamenting the lack of such discourse. "The place has become something that polarizes. We don't want that," he stated.

The organization is now re-evaluating the cafe's Saturday operations, aiming to make a difficult decision that aligns with their faith's principles of respecting others. They hope to find a way forward that fosters acceptance, even amidst disagreement, and are concerned that the cafe has become a divisive symbol rather than a welcoming space.
