Jerusalem Cafe May Close on Saturdays Amid Ultra-Orthodox Protests

The management of "Cafe BaSmalta" in Jerusalem is expected to decide in the coming days whether to cease Saturday operations, following over six weeks of protests and confrontations by ultra-Orthodox demonstrators. The decision is reportedly being weighed due to fears of further escalation and the emotional toll of the ongoing conflict, with some within the management seeking to end the disturbances and restore normalcy.

The missionary cafe, affiliated with the "Jews for Jesus" organization, has been the target of escalating harassment for more than six weeks. Incidents have included eggs and stones being thrown, tables overturned, attempts to break into the cafe, glue being poured into the door lock, and even feces being thrown at the premises.

In response to the protests, the cafe has also garnered significant support. Residents, activists, and public officials have visited the cafe, with dozens of customers showing up each Saturday. On one occasion, customers formed a human chain at the entrance while police dispersed protesters using force and stun grenades.

Sources close to the management indicated that the organization is debating whether to continue the struggle, which has turned the cafe into a constant point of friction. A final decision is anticipated soon, which would mark the end of over six weeks of weekly protests outside the establishment.
