Israel's School Year Begins Amid Teacher Shortages, No Strikes

Israel's new school year is set to commence on Tuesday, with over 2.6 million students returning to classrooms and kindergartens. Despite a significant shortage of teachers, the academic year will start without any threatened strikes, a departure from recent years. This opening occurs against a backdrop of ongoing tensions with Gaza and Iran, but notably, it is the first time in three years that Israel is not engaged in active, intense warfare.

The Ministry of Education has invested over a billion shekels in summer educational programs, reaching more than 1.1 million students. These initiatives, including "Bigadiyot" (kindergartens) and "Summer Plus" programs, aimed to maintain educational continuity and provide support during the summer break.

Education Minister Yoav Kisch highlighted the focus for the upcoming year, emphasizing a philosophy that connects belonging and security, identity and roots, with knowledge and tools for a changing world. The ministry plans to expand STEM and artificial intelligence studies, introduce financial education for the first time, and continue promoting personalized and innovative learning.

Director General of the Ministry of Education, Meir Shimoni, stated that the entire system has worked to prepare schools and kindergartens for the opening day. The ministry is committed to supporting staff and ensuring that policies and resources reach every student. This year presents particular challenges for students in the northern border communities, many of whom have not yet returned to their homes, and for children in the Gaza envelope communities, nearly three years after the October 7th attacks.
