Education System Chaos Looms as School Year Nears

With the Israeli school year set to begin tomorrow, August 31st, the education system is reportedly in chaos due to a severe shortage of teachers. A senior official within the Ministry of Education has accused the Minister and Director-General of deliberately misrepresenting the situation, claiming they will present data showing only hundreds of teachers are missing, a figure the official calls a "blatant lie."

The anonymous official stated that the ministry is manipulating terminology, changing the term "teacher shortage" to "teacher needs" to create a more positive public perception. "They decided not to say teacher shortages but teacher needs, meaning how many teachers the system needs, because it sounds better," the official explained. "The field is screaming, everything is a catastrophe, and they are doing everything to paint a rosy picture."

Parents and students are reporting that many classes still do not have assigned homeroom teachers. The shortage is so acute that in some cases, a single homeroom teacher is reportedly responsible for two classes simultaneously, even in the youngest grades like first grade. Teacher recruitment is ongoing across numerous subjects, and the uncertainty about who will be teaching and guiding students is causing significant distress.

The official further alleged that the ministry's priority is to reduce the perceived shortage, even if it means hiring unqualified individuals. "As far as they are concerned, let a cat come teach, as long as they can say they reduced the teacher shortage," the official added, highlighting the desperation to present a successful start to the academic year.
