Israeli Agencies Conduct Joint Drill for Election Preparedness

Multiple Israeli government bodies, including the Central Elections Committee, Israel Police, and the Shin Bet security agency, participated in a joint exercise Tuesday to bolster readiness for the upcoming 26th Knesset elections. The drill simulated various scenarios, focusing on enhancing inter-organizational decision-making, synchronization, and overall preparedness for democratic voting processes and election integrity.

The simulations addressed physical threats, undue influence campaigns, and the interfaces between agencies in managing these challenges. They aimed to identify dilemmas, develop solutions, and pinpoint issues and gaps for further discussion and improvement. This exercise is part of an ongoing effort to strengthen cooperation among these bodies to face potential challenges during the elections.

Central Elections Committee Chairman Justice Noam Sohlberg emphasized that election integrity is a national mission, extending beyond mere logistics. He highlighted the importance of ensuring citizens can vote without fear, coercion, or undue influence, and stressed the need to protect voters, candidates, and election workers, maintain operational continuity, and uphold public trust in the process and its outcomes.

Sohlberg noted the blurred lines between physical and psychological threats, explaining how a physical event could be leveraged for influence campaigns, or how online rumors could incite physical disturbances. He stated the exercise would address physical threats, influence threats, and their combination.

Acting Director-General of the Central Elections Committee, Adv. Dean Livneh, described elections as one of the state's most complex civilian operations, requiring flawless execution due to the inability to correct errors on election day. He stressed the need to improve inter-organizational decision-making and identify gaps in responsibilities, procedures, resources, and information channels.

Commander of the Elections Administration at the Israel Police, Superintendent Eli Pinto, affirmed the police's commitment to ensuring citizens can vote securely and freely. He stated the drill would refine inter-agency coordination, clarify responsibilities, and practice rapid, synchronized responses to potential disruptions. The police vowed to act decisively against any violence, intimidation, or disruption of the voting process.
