Three Newborns Hospitalized After Complications From Home Births in Israel

Three newborns in Israel have been hospitalized in recent days due to severe complications arising from home births. Two infants were admitted in critical condition to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem, while a third was taken to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon. The condition of all three has since stabilized.

One newborn required resuscitation and was later treated with therapeutic hypothermia to prevent brain damage after suffering a disruption in blood supply to the brain. Another infant was admitted in shock due to postpartum bleeding. This baby, a girl, was found to have a severe deficiency in Vitamin K, which is crucial for blood clotting and is routinely administered to newborns in Israel immediately after birth to prevent life-threatening hemorrhages. Her parents had reportedly decided against administering the vitamin.

The first incident occurred Monday night when parents called for emergency services about an hour after a home birth due to the baby's deteriorating condition. At Hadassah Ein Kerem, the infant presented with respiratory distress, cyanosis, and neurological issues, including seizures detected through brain activity monitoring, leading to the therapeutic cooling treatment.

Another case involved a three-day-old girl admitted last Friday with severe bleeding and shock. Doctors diagnosed her with severe acidosis and critically low hemoglobin levels. The Ministry of Health in Israel recommends hospital births, noting that unforeseen complications can arise during and after delivery, making immediate medical intervention essential. Home births are not prohibited in Israel.
