Three Infants Hospitalized in Serious Condition After Home Birth Complications

Three infants were recently hospitalized in serious condition following complications from home births. Two babies were rushed to Hadassah Mount Scopus Medical Center and one to Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon. One infant required resuscitation, another suffered from a lack of blood supply to the brain and underwent therapeutic cooling, and a third experienced shock due to postpartum bleeding.

At Hadassah, medical teams saved the lives of two infants. In one case, a baby born at home was brought to the hospital about an hour after birth due to severe distress. Doctors identified respiratory distress, a bluish skin tone, and an abnormal neurological state, leading to the infant being transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit and undergoing body cooling to prevent brain damage. Professor Smadar Even-Tov, head of the neonatology department, was on call and treated the infant, whose condition has since stabilized.

In another incident at Hadassah, a three-day-old infant born at home was urgently brought to the emergency room due to significant bleeding. The infant was found in shock with severe acidosis and very low hemoglobin levels, described as life-threatening. Tests revealed a Vitamin K deficiency, which the parents had opted not to administer after birth. Vitamin K is routinely given to newborns to prevent potentially fatal bleeding.

The Ministry of Health recommends giving birth in hospitals but does not prohibit home births. Officials emphasize that hospital births allow for immediate assessment and rapid intervention if a newborn's condition deteriorates, thereby reducing the risk of further harm. The recent cases highlight the potential for unexpected complications during and after home births and the critical importance of immediate medical access.
