Israeli Charity Boosts Food Aid for Needy Families Ahead of Jewish Holidays
The Israeli organization 'Mashbia' is launching a special campaign to provide enhanced food baskets to needy families in anticipation of the upcoming Tishrei holidays. The charity, which has been supplying monthly food baskets to the underprivileged for approximately 30 years, aims to alleviate financial burdens during the high holiday season. This initiative comes amid a significant increase in families requiring assistance, exacerbated by the ongoing war and the rising cost of living in recent years.
From its warehouse in the Ofra industrial zone, 'Mashbia' distributes around 500 food baskets monthly to families across the West Bank. According to Natanel Shanir, the organization's director, these baskets typically contain dry goods, supplemented with poultry and fish. During the holidays, the baskets are further enriched with fruits and vegetables.
Volunteers and staff pack the baskets, which are then transported by the organization's truck to local coordinators in various communities. Shanir explained that each community has a "kindness coordinator" connected to the local rabbi or welfare department, who helps update the list of recipients. These coordinators discreetly deliver the food parcels to ensure dignity and privacy for the families receiving aid.
The organization's distribution network strives to reach families and areas that may not receive assistance from other sources. Shanir noted that the war has led to an influx of new recipients, including families of fallen soldiers, who are now being supported by 'Mashbia' to help them celebrate the holidays. The organization is also preparing for a "Kapara redemption" campaign around Yom Kippur, aiming to further expand its support.
Shanir emphasized the importance of charity during this period, stating that donations for the Kapara redemption will enable more families to receive holiday food baskets. The coordinators ensure the baskets reach the families directly, allowing donors to fulfill the mitzvah while providing essential holiday provisions.
