Routine Clinic Visit Leads to Early Cancer Detection and Hysterectomy Recommendation

Nava Lerner, a 73-year-old patient at Maccabi Healthcare Services in Zichron Yaakov, Israel, visited a clinic last month for a simple administrative matter. During her visit, a service coordinator, Dafna Berman Blum, noticed that Lerner had not undergone regular gynecological check-ups for an extended period.

Berman Blum, going beyond her standard duties, alerted Lerner to the importance of these screenings. She personally accompanied Lerner to a gynecologist who was available at the clinic. During the examination, significant pre-cancerous changes were discovered in Lerner's cervix.

Following further medical evaluations, Lerner is now scheduled to undergo a hysterectomy to prevent the potential progression of the disease. Lerner expressed her gratitude in a letter to the clinic, stating that Berman Blum "didn't just see a medical file, she saw me and acted." She emphasized that the early detection, thanks to the coordinator's attentiveness, likely saved her health.

Berman Blum commented that she believes her role involves a broader responsibility than just technical assistance, aiming to see the person behind the request. Dr. Lilia Tzur, a women's health specialist at Maccabi, highlighted that early detection is crucial for cervical cancer, as initial changes often lack symptoms. She stressed the importance of regular screenings, even when feeling healthy, to identify pre-cancerous conditions and enable timely treatment, thereby preventing the disease's advancement. Cervical cancer is often linked to persistent HPV infection, and the WHO notes that much of its incidence and mortality is preventable through vaccination, screening, and regular medical follow-up.
