Green Vervet Monkey Found Illegally Kept in Southern Israel Home
Police in southern Israel discovered a green vervet monkey being held illegally in a cage inside a private residence in the community of Moshav Bria over the weekend. The operation was conducted by officers from the Lehavim station, along with Border Police and the Southern Unit for Wildlife Protection.
The monkey was rescued and transferred to the care of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority inspectors. It was subsequently moved to the Israeli Primate Sanctuary for medical examinations and ongoing care.
The homeowner, a man in his 30s, was arrested and questioned on suspicion of illegal trading and possession of a protected wild animal. He was later released under restrictive conditions.
Authorities reminded the public that keeping monkeys in private homes is prohibited and constitutes a violation, primarily due to the complex social and physical needs of these animals that cannot be met in captivity. Previous incidents involving illegally held monkeys have also been reported.
