Israel Braces for Unseasonal Rain and Flooding After Cyprus Storm

Israel is experiencing unseasonable weather for late August, with strong winds reaching up to 70 km/h reported across the country. Following a severe storm system that affected the Eastern Mediterranean, including Cyprus, Lebanon, and Syria, Israel is now anticipating local rainfall, primarily in the north, and a significant drop in temperatures, bringing relief from the heat. The Meteorological Service had initially predicted widespread rain, but updated models suggest smaller quantities, though the possibility of short, intense downpours and subsequent urban flooding and flash floods in streams remains a concern.

The Drainage Authority has issued warnings about potential urban flooding and sudden stream flows in areas expected to receive rain. They are urging the public to exercise caution, avoid entering stream beds or crossing flooded roads and passages, and to heed the instructions of emergency services. The authority emphasized that entering stream beds, hiking trails near water sources, or flood-prone open areas is strictly prohibited, as is crossing any flooded areas by foot or vehicle.

Cyprus issued a severe thunderstorm warning, anticipating heavy rain, hail, and wind gusts of 55-70 mm per hour, along with a waterspout sighting off the coast. While the storm system has moved on from Cyprus, its effects are being felt in Israel. The weather shift is a stark contrast to the preceding period of heat and humidity.

In response to the adverse weather conditions, several outdoor performances scheduled for Sunday evening have been canceled or postponed. Notably, a concert by Marina Maximilian at Ariel Sharon Park was called off due to strong winds, with organizers citing safety concerns and a desire for attendees to enjoy the performance optimally. A new date for the concert will be announced soon.
