Strong Winds Hit Israel as Summer Storm Approaches, Cyprus and Lebanon Face Severe Weather

Israel is experiencing strong winds reaching gusts of up to 70 km/h, accompanied by dust reducing visibility from Modiin to the Negev. The Meteorological Service issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms and lightning in northern Israel, including the Hula Valley and the Sea of Galilee, with rain expected in the north by Saturday evening. However, rainfall is predicted to be limited and concentrated mainly in the western and upper Galilee and the Golan Heights, with possible localized flooding. Dr. Amir Givati, head of the Meteorological Service, noted that southern areas might see some rain but in smaller amounts and intensity.

The storm has already impacted Lebanon and Cyprus, where heavy rains, strong winds, and lightning caused damage. In Lebanon, flash floods and lightning strikes were reported in the north near the village of Yachoush and the Akkar region. In Cyprus, Israelis received phone alerts reminiscent of wartime warnings, as the storm caused fallen trees, blocked roads, power outages, and a fire sparked by a lightning strike on a power pole. A Blue Bird flight from Larnaca to Israel was delayed due to rain and turbulence, with passengers describing a frightening experience during takeoff and landing. The airline confirmed the flight was conducted safely under professional protocols.

In Israel, the strong winds led to the cancellation of singer Marina Maximilian's concert at Ariel Sharon Park due to safety concerns. Authorities warned visitors to the Sea of Galilee to be cautious of sudden strong gusts, floating away with flotation devices, and falling branches. Localized rain showers are expected to continue into Sunday afternoon, especially in the north. By Tuesday, the first day of school, weather conditions are expected to improve with warmer temperatures and mostly clear skies.
