Ofer Winter Launches New Party Challenging Netanyahu and Smotrich in Religious Zionist Camp

Ofer Winter, a former elite IDF officer and commander of the Givati reconnaissance battalion, has entered Israeli politics with a new party called "Amcha Yisrael," shaking up the right-wing political landscape. Winter, who served alongside Naftali Bennett in the IDF's elite units and was known for his religious-nationalist views, spent two years preparing for this political move, capitalizing on a perceived vacuum within the Religious Zionist sector. His party directly challenges Bezalel Smotrich and poses a headache for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Winter's political rise comes amid fractures in the traditional alliance between the Religious Zionist community and ultra-Orthodox parties, particularly over ongoing Haredi refusal to enlist in the military. Winter has cultivated support among pre-military preparatory programs and Hesder yeshivas, appealing to many in the Religious Zionist community who feel politically homeless and disillusioned with both Netanyahu and Smotrich. Strategic advisor Avi Benayahu noted that many in this sector seek a new political home that aligns with their values and service backgrounds.

Winter's military career was marked by bravery and initiative, including a controversial religious-themed letter he wrote during Operation Protective Edge, which some viewed as contributing to the increasing religiosity in the IDF. Despite his combat record and leadership, three IDF Chiefs of Staff declined to promote him to general rank, fueling perceptions among right-wing circles that his political views hindered his military advancement.

After leaving the IDF in December 2024, Winter declined Netanyahu's offer of a secured high spot on the Likud list, signaling his independence. His party's launch was professionally staged, with a campaign color referencing his Givati brigade beret and a slogan playing on "Winter is coming" from Game of Thrones. Winter's political camp includes diverse elements, including both religious and Arab supporters, aiming to unite different groups.

Netanyahu has publicly urged voters not to support Winter, though he has refrained from labeling him as left-wing. The new party's emergence is causing tension within the right-wing bloc, with pressure expected for Winter to merge with Smotrich's faction, which he currently resists to maintain his distinct identity. Some analysts speculate Winter might be a proxy for Netanyahu to attract disaffected right-wing voters without fracturing the bloc.
