Ex-IDF Chief Gadi Eisenkot Criticizes Netanyahu Over Gaza Crossing Plans

Former IDF Chief of Staff and Yesha Council Chairman Gadi Eisenkot sharply criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday regarding reports of preparations to reopen the Erez crossing and transfer goods between Israel and the Gaza Strip. Eisenkot accused Netanyahu, whom he called the "father of the concept of strengthening Hamas," of conducting direct negotiations with the terrorist organization through close associates during wartime. He condemned the government for advancing the reopening under a "smokescreen," including visits by senior Israeli officials, equipment purchases, and coordination with European countries.

Eisenkot argued that these actions demonstrate that Netanyahu and his government have not changed the policy approach toward Hamas that existed before the October 7 attack. He dismissed attempts to rewrite history about the pre-October 7 period, stating that Netanyahu remains deeply invested in the concept of strengthening Hamas as the sovereign power in Gaza. Eisenkot attributed this to a lack of strategy, courage, and decision-making ability.

He concluded his critique by asserting that Netanyahu's government remains stuck in the mindset of October 6 and, out of fear, refuses to conduct investigations and learning processes that could prevent future disasters.
