Ex-IDF Chief Gadi Eizenkot Opposes Construction in E1 Area Between Jerusalem and Maale Adumim

Gadi Eizenkot, former IDF Chief of Staff and current chairman of the Yisrael party, has taken a hawkish stance against the establishment of a Palestinian state, calling the idea "delusional" after the October 7 attacks. However, he opposes advancing construction plans in the E1 area between Jerusalem and Maale Adumim, warning that such moves would be a mistake with costly international repercussions. In an interview with Israel Hayom, Eizenkot said that even Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously opposed the E1 construction but eventually approved it under coalition pressure.

Eizenkot also sharply criticized far-right ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, accusing them of harming Israel's international standing and endangering the entire settlement enterprise through their actions and settler violence against Palestinians. He emphasized the need to manage the political and security situation carefully to protect Israel's global reputation, despite his opposition to a Palestinian state under current conditions.

In response, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich defended his promotion of construction in E1, calling it "the cutting off of the dream of establishing a terror state near Jerusalem." He asserted that opposing building in E1 equates to supporting the creation of a Palestinian state. This exchange highlights ongoing tensions within the Israeli right-wing over settlement policy and the broader approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict following recent violence.
