Extensive Preparations Underway at Rabbi Nachman’s Tomb in Uman Ahead of Rosh Hashanah Pilgrimage

As Rosh Hashanah approaches, preparations are intensifying at the site of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov’s tomb in Uman, Ukraine, in anticipation of tens of thousands of pilgrims. The site’s management is completing a series of maintenance and halachic accessibility improvements to ensure the complex is fully ready to accommodate the large crowds. Priority is given to the safety of worshippers and the integrity of infrastructure, addressing numerous unfinished finishing works from recent renovations.

Workers from the Breslov Union in Uman are actively repairing and installing fences, adjusting slopes on access paths, building stairs, and placing handrails to elevate safety standards. To handle the increased number of prayer groups during the holiday, prayer areas have been expanded into the courtyards surrounding the tomb. New lighting systems, tables, benches, and reading stands for Torah readings have been installed, with holy ark cabinets to be placed before the holiday to facilitate organized and spacious prayer services.

Special attention is also given to access routes and segregation for Kohanim (priests), with clear yellow markings indicating areas where they must avoid due to ritual purity concerns. New partitions and signage are being installed to ensure these areas meet the highest halachic standards, allowing Kohanim to remain without fear of ritual impurity.

Additionally, a thorough inspection of all mezuzot throughout the site and prayer halls was conducted. Several mezuzot that were invalid or worn out have been replaced with new ones, and new mezuzot were affixed in other locations following strict halachic guidelines and rabbinic consultation. These comprehensive preparations aim to provide a safe, accessible, and spiritually appropriate environment for the thousands expected to gather at Rabbi Nachman’s tomb during the High Holiday period.
