Israeli Attorney General Orders Cancellation of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef Memorial, Religious Ministry Demands Rabin Memorial Cancellation Too

The Israeli Attorney General's Office has instructed the Ministry of Religious Services to cancel the annual memorial event for Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, originally scheduled for October 6, due to its proximity to the upcoming elections. The Attorney General argued that because Rabbi Yosef was closely linked to the Shas party, the event could not be separated from political campaigning, despite assurances that no political figures from Shas would participate.

In response, Yehuda Avidan, Director General of the Ministry of Religious Services, strongly opposed the decision, stating it contradicts Knesset legislation that mandates the memorial. Avidan demanded clarification on whether the state memorial for former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, whose affiliated party is also running in the elections, would face similar restrictions. He argued that if political campaigning concerns prevent Rabbi Yosef's memorial, the same logic should apply to Rabin's commemoration.

The dispute highlights tensions between the Attorney General's Office and the Ministry of Religious Services over the intersection of political activity and state-sponsored memorials during election periods. Shas party representatives condemned the Attorney General's demand as an affront to Rabbi Yosef's legacy and vowed to pursue all legal avenues to overturn the cancellation.
