Israeli Religious Affairs Chief Challenges Justice Ministry Over Canceling Rabbi Ovadia Memorial Day

Yehuda Avidan, Director General of Israel's Ministry of Religious Services, has sharply criticized the Justice Ministry's decision to cancel this year's official "Maran Day," the state memorial day for Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. In a letter sent to the Justice Ministry, Avidan demanded an explanation for the cancellation, which was scheduled for October 8, just weeks before the national elections. He argued the decision lacked sufficient justification and contradicted a legal opinion supporting the event's occurrence.

Avidan questioned why memorial events for former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, a prominent political figure, are still planned despite concerns over political implications, while Rabbi Ovadia's memorial, a spiritual figure enshrined in law, was canceled. He noted that Rabin's political party is currently running in the elections, emphasizing the political nature of Rabin's legacy. Rabin's memorial events are set for October 22-23, including ceremonies in schools and public institutions, which have historically sparked political disputes and boycotts.

Avidan demanded the Justice Ministry clarify whether the rationale used to cancel Maran Day should also apply to Rabin's memorial events, suggesting that fairness and logic require postponing Rabin's events if Maran Day remains canceled. The letter highlights the sensitive timing amid the election period and calls for a reassessment of both commemorations. It remains to be seen if the Justice Ministry will reconsider its decision on Maran Day and whether Avidan's arguments will prompt a review of Rabin's memorial events.
