Kfar Masaryk Named World's Best Tourism Village for 2026 by UN

Kfar Masaryk, a small kibbutz in Israel's Western Galilee, is set to receive the prestigious title of one of the "Best Tourism Villages in the World 2026," awarded by the United Nations next month. This recognition follows a competitive process where over 250 villages worldwide apply annually, with about 40 finalists selected for their authentic rural character, cultural heritage, and sustainable tourism development. Kfar Masaryk previously reached the finals in 2023 and has since worked closely with mentors from the UN World Tourism Organization and Israel's Ministry of Tourism to meet the award criteria.

Founded in 1938 by immigrants from Lithuania and Czechoslovakia, Kfar Masaryk is named after Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia, reflecting values of equality and peace. Unlike other kibbutzim focused on agriculture, it initially developed industrial enterprises, including factories producing paints, ceramics, and electronics. Today, the kibbutz combines agriculture, industry, and tourism, with about 5,000 dunams of cultivated fields and fish ponds, including plans to introduce a new fish species, Mangrove Jack, for gourmet dining.

Tourism in Kfar Masaryk centers on "The Miracle Secret," a heritage site showcasing the kibbutz's history from its founding to the present through exhibits, tours, and cultural activities. Visitors can stay at the kibbutz guesthouse, enjoy communal meals, and participate in guided nature tours, workshops, and local arts experiences. The community maintains a strong collective spirit, with shared facilities like a pool, pub, and coffee cart enhancing the visitor experience.

Additional attractions include a therapeutic horse-riding farm, a small winery producing several wine varieties, and a nature garden commemorating a young member lost in conflict. The kibbutz is also expanding its guesthouse accommodations and exploring partnerships with hotel and rural tourism networks. The official announcement of the award is expected by the end of September, marking Kfar Masaryk as Israel's sole representative in the competition this year.

This accolade follows previous Israeli winners such as Kfar Kama in 2022 and Kibbutz Neot Smadar last year, highlighting the growing global recognition of Israel's rural tourism potential and commitment to preserving cultural and natural heritage while fostering sustainable economic growth.
