Israel Faces Severe Shortage of School Principals Ahead of New Academic Year

With just five days remaining before the start of the school year, Israel's Ministry of Education announced a shortage of 800 teachers, highlighting a deepening crisis in the education system. Alongside this, a significant decline in applicants for school principal positions has emerged, marking a new dimension of the staffing challenges. According to the school principals' organization "Manhigim," approximately 1,000 principals left the system last year. The Ministry of Education reported to Channel 13 News that there is currently a shortage of 22 principals. However, filling all vacancies may require compromising on the quality of leadership, not only among teachers but also among principals.

An alarming new development is the practice of assigning one principal to manage two schools simultaneously, a solution set to be implemented next year in Tel Aviv. While city officials describe this as an isolated case that does not reflect a widespread shortage, education experts warn that managing two schools at once is a highly complex task and an undesirable compromise for the education of children. The principal shortage adds to the ongoing tensions and protests within the education sector, which have already been evident among teachers, parents, and students.

The education crisis is underscored by recent protests that reached the Ministry of Education, where discussions with Education Minister Yoav Kisch took place but failed to resolve the underlying issues.
