Israel Cuts Teacher Shortage by 73% Ahead of New School Year

The Israeli Ministry of Education has significantly reduced the shortage of teachers nationwide, shrinking the gap from approximately 3,000 to 800 within four months. This development was revealed by Meir Shimoni, the ministry's Director General, during a Knesset Education Committee meeting on August 31, 2026. The effort was led under the guidance of Education Minister Yoav Kish in preparation for the upcoming school year 5787 (2026-2027).

Shimoni detailed that in May 2026, the teacher deficit stood at around 3,000, but through extensive recruitment and staffing initiatives, the ministry managed to cut the shortage by about 73%. Committee Chairman MK Tzvi Sukkot praised the ministry's work and Minister Kish's leadership, emphasizing that the committee will continue monitoring progress to ensure the remaining gap is closed before the school year begins on September 1.

The committee's goal remains to guarantee that every student has the teacher they need at the start of the academic year. The ongoing oversight reflects the importance placed on fully resolving staffing challenges in Israel's education system.
