Israel's Education Ministry Cuts Teacher Shortage From 3,000 to 800 Ahead of School Year
Ahead of the September 1 school year start, Israel's Education Ministry has significantly reduced the teacher shortage in schools from approximately 3,000 in May to about 800, according to Meir Shimoni, the ministry's CEO. He revealed this improvement during a Knesset Education, Culture and Sports Committee meeting on Thursday, highlighting a 73% decrease in unfilled teaching positions over four months due to concentrated recruitment efforts.
Despite this progress, the committee acknowledged that hundreds of teaching vacancies remain and emphasized the need for comprehensive operational solutions to ensure smooth school openings and consistent learning. Committee chairman MK Tzvi Sukkot praised the ministry's efforts and leadership under Education Minister Yoav Kish but stressed the goal of having every student assigned a teacher by the new school year.
