Israeli Defense Minister Declares Tough Response to Gaza Balloon and Kite Launches

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Ketz held a situation assessment on Thursday afternoon with IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and senior military officials, announcing that the ultimatum regarding balloon and kite launches from Gaza into southern Israeli communities has ended. Ketz warned that any further launches will be met with a severe response, emphasizing that Israel views each launch as an act of terrorism. "From now on, every launch will be met with a powerful response against those responsible, organizers, and the launch sites," he stated.

Ketz added that under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's and his own directives, the IDF will employ all necessary means, including evacuating populations from areas used for launches, to dismantle terror infrastructure. He stressed that Hamas or any other group will not be allowed to resume the previous pattern of harassment and threats against southern communities, warning that violators will pay a heavy price.

The escalation follows recent incidents, including the discovery of a balloon in Nahal Oz in the Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council on Monday, after four similar devices crossed from Gaza over the weekend. Sha'ar HaNegev Council head Uri Epstein criticized Israel's current reactive policy and called for clear and decisive action to identify and neutralize threats in real time.

On Wednesday, Chief of Staff Zamir toured Gaza with senior commanders, reiterating that the IDF remains committed to its overarching goal of disarming Hamas by all necessary means. He highlighted the ongoing multi-front challenges Israel faces, including in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, and Iran.

Prime Minister Netanyahu, following a security briefing on Sunday, affirmed Israel's resolve not to return to the pre-October 7 situation, warning Hamas against resuming attacks. He confirmed that the IDF will intensify efforts to thwart those responsible for launches and evacuate areas used for such activities.

Defense Minister Ketz ordered the IDF to act decisively against balloon and kite launches, including targeting Hamas leaders responsible and dismantling terror infrastructure. He reiterated that every launch is considered a military act and will be met with immediate and severe consequences.
