Following the traumatic events of October 7 and the Iron Swords war, there has been a sharp increase in individuals suffering from trauma and post-traumatic stress, with around 26,000 new war casualties added since October 7. Approximately 65% of these individuals experience mental distress including PTSD, anxiety, depression, or adjustment difficulties. In response, Ichilov Medical Center and the nonprofit organization 'Lema'anchem' have signed an agreement to establish a center for early trauma intervention. This center will expand the existing 'Asif' trauma treatment center at Ichilov and provide free professional mental health care to reservists, security personnel, and their families.
The new center will also specifically address the needs of family members, often referred to as "invisible wounded," who bear significant emotional burdens yet frequently lack adequate support. Trauma affects entire families, including spouses, parents, siblings, and children, and the center aims to strengthen both personal and family resilience to facilitate a return to normal functioning. Early intervention is designed to reduce the risk of chronic PTSD and improve rehabilitation outcomes.
The center will operate from the offices of 'Lema'anchem' and be managed by the professional team from Ichilov's Asif center, led by Dr. Roy On and psychologist Racheli Fant. Services will include focused, short-term treatments by clinical psychologists and social workers, with a professional triage system ensuring rapid response. Patients requiring more complex or long-term care will be referred to Ichilov Medical Center to maintain continuity of treatment.
At the signing ceremony, key figures included Ichilov CEO Prof. Eli Sprecher, 'Lema'anchem' founder Yossi Arbelich, IDF Mental Health Services commander Col. Dr. Yaakov Rothschild, and former Health Ministry director Prof. Hazi Levi. Prof. Sprecher emphasized the importance of proactive community outreach and addressing the ripple effects of trauma on families. Arbelich highlighted the urgent need for early mental health support for reservists, security forces, and their families, calling the partnership a vital step in saving lives and building resilience.
'Lema'anchem' is a nonprofit providing free medical guidance and support, handling tens of thousands of inquiries annually with senior medical experts assisting patients and families through complex medical processes.
