On Sunday, Supreme Court Judge Noam Solberg, chairman of Israel's Central Elections Committee, rejected the Likud party's request to reconsider his ruling that prohibits party representatives at polling stations from transmitting real-time information about voter identities to their parties. Solberg clarified that his decision does not change election laws near the voting date but rather enforces existing privacy protections under a specific privacy law. He noted that in recent years, committee heads have questioned the legality of sharing voter identity data, and parties should have prepared for the possibility that this practice would be banned, including by promoting legislation to regulate it.
Solberg also called on Knesset factions and other stakeholders involved in the election process to propose feasible methods to encourage voter turnout while respecting the privacy principles outlined in his ruling. After reviewing submitted suggestions, the committee decided it will publish turnout rates at each regular polling station at least four times on election day. These aggregated turnout statistics will be equally accessible to all parties, enabling them to mobilize voters without revealing any individual voter identities.
This approach balances the need for parties to encourage voting with the obligation to protect Israeli citizens' privacy and maintain the integrity of the election process. The data shared will be purely statistical, preventing identification of any specific voter's participation.
