Israel Faces Critical Blood Shortage as Patients Urge Public to Donate

The story · English

Seventy-one-year-old Yaffa Ben Shimol has relied on biweekly blood transfusions for seven years due to myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a bone marrow disorder that impairs blood cell production. She describes blood as her "medicine," essential for her survival and daily functioning, with severe symptoms like nausea and dizziness without it. Recently, Israel's national blood supply, especially type O blood, has dropped sharply, prompting the Ministry of Health and Magen David Adom (MDA) to call on the public to donate urgently across the country.

Blood donations are critical for routine medical procedures, including surgeries, childbirth, treatments, and emergency care for injured soldiers. Dr. Rafael Strugo, MDA's Deputy Director of Medical and Blood Services, highlighted the challenge of maintaining donation levels outside crisis periods, noting summer vacations and holidays reduce donor turnout. He emphasized that blood has a limited shelf life and must be replenished continuously to meet ongoing needs.

Dr. Vered Yahalom, head of the Blood Services Institute at Beilinson Hospital, stressed that many patients depend on regular transfusions, making blood a vital resource for saving lives and emergency preparedness. She urged citizens to donate at least once a year to sustain the supply. Similarly, Kobi, a patient with myelofibrosis, shared how blood transfusions are crucial for managing his fatigue and quality of life, as no alternative treatments are suitable for him.

Professor Martin Ellis, director of the blood bank at Meir Medical Center, noted that one donation can save up to three lives. Yaffa Ben Shimol also appealed to healthy individuals to donate, recalling her late brother and daughter who regularly gave blood. She described donation as a simple act that can prevent life-threatening shortages.

MDA continues to operate donation centers nationwide and urges the public not to wait for emergencies to donate. Information on donation sites and hours is available on the MDA website.
