Israeli Bar Chief Faces Backlash Over Two-Minute Court Silence for Murdered Lawyer

The story · English

Amid outrage from the legal community, Amit Bechar, chairman of the Israeli Bar Association, announced a two-minute suspension of court hearings to honor a lawyer recently murdered in Rishon Lezion. The move, made on Wednesday, was intended as a symbolic gesture of mourning and protest against violence targeting lawyers. However, many lawyers criticized the action as insufficient and poorly timed, given that it occurred during the court recess period when hearings are already paused.

Critics argued that the Bar Association should have pursued more substantial measures over the years, including legislative changes and stronger protections for lawyers facing threats and violence. Some questioned the effectiveness of symbolic acts such as standing, lighting candles, or wearing black shirts, emphasizing that these do not prevent future attacks. Others pointed out the irony of holding a protest during a court recess, with one lawyer sarcastically asking if the Bar was aware that courts were not in session.

Additional criticism targeted the Bar Association's handling of lawyers under threat. One female lawyer shared her experience of ongoing threats from a criminal who had even come to her home despite multiple protection orders, stating that the Bar had shown no interest or support. Personal attacks were also directed at Bechar, with some calling his response a "shameful post" and vowing to vote against him in upcoming elections. The controversy highlights ongoing concerns about the safety and protection of legal professionals in Israel and the perceived inadequacy of current institutional responses.
