Israeli Bar Association Chief Condemns Knesset Speaker Over State Comptroller Appointment Delay

Amith Bechar, chairman of the Israeli Bar Association, has sharply criticized Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana for failing to implement a Supreme Court ruling regarding the appointment of the State Comptroller. In a letter sent through attorney Idan Seger, Bechar demanded immediate action from Ohana and the Knesset's legal advisor to comply with the court's decision. He accused Ohana of not only disregarding the ruling but also undermining the Knesset's authority and the foundations of the rule of law in Israel.

Bechar warned that Ohana's conduct sends a dangerous message to the public, eroding respect for legal rulings and encouraging lawlessness and violence. He stated, "When the Knesset Speaker ignores a court ruling, what example does that set for citizens? It is no wonder that we live in a country where defiance of the law and violence are rampant."

The Bar Association head further linked Ohana's behavior to a broader pattern within the current government, accusing ministers such as Levin and Karai of routinely defying court decisions and damaging democratic principles and the legacy of the Likud party and its leaders, including Menachem Begin and Benjamin Netanyahu before 2015. Bechar emphasized that the government's actions will soon face public judgment in elections and vowed to continue defending democracy and the rule of law through legal channels as necessary.
