Oscar Gloukh, the 22-year-old Israeli midfielder at Ajax, is entering a pivotal season under new Spanish coach Michel, who has already shown a demanding approach. Michel, who previously led Girona to the Champions League, has openly criticized Gloukh for lapses in pressure play and ball control during training and matches, including a recent Conference League qualifier against Vojvodina. Despite the harsh feedback, Michel praised Gloukh's overall performance and goal-scoring, highlighting the coach's intent to develop the player by addressing his risky turnovers.
Gloukh's first season at Ajax was challenging, marked by inconsistent form and tactical shifts under three different coaches. His tendency to lose possession and his perceived softness drew criticism, but this season's strong start, with four goals in two Conference League games, suggests growth and adaptation to Michel's style, which emphasizes ball control, patience, and high pressing. Fans have responded positively, applauding Gloukh's contributions.
Ajax is undergoing a difficult period, having failed to win the Dutch league for four consecutive seasons and suffering poor European results. The club has seen ten coaching changes since its last championship in 2021/22 and is searching for leadership on the pitch, a role Gloukh is now expected to embrace. The return of club legend Daley Blind and new signings like goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen and midfielder Julian Brandt aim to strengthen the squad.
Gloukh's position remains under scrutiny, with competition from new players and tactical adjustments ongoing. His role with the Israeli national team also reflects this uncertainty, as he has been deployed in various positions without consistent impact. Ajax's upcoming matches, including a Conference League qualifier against Shelbourne and the Eredivisie opener against Zwolle, will be critical for Gloukh to solidify his place and influence.
Dutch commentators stress that Michel's coaching philosophy suits Gloukh's style, but warn that this may be his last chance to establish himself as a key player. The season ahead will test whether Gloukh can seize this opportunity and help Ajax regain its competitive edge domestically and in Europe.
