The story · English

The Satmar Rebbe, currently resting in the New York resort town of New Paltz, led a deeply emotional Tisha B'Av observance at the local study hall, joined by thousands of Hasidim from across the United States. He mourned the destruction of the Temple with tears and later conducted a communal Kiddush Levana ceremony in the town's streets, followed by a festive gathering featuring songs of redemption and yearning for the rebuilding of the Temple.

During his stay, the Satmar Rebbe also visited the Shawangunk prison in New York, where he met with several Jewish inmates, offering them encouragement and advocating for improved conditions with prison officials. This visit was part of a broader series of Hasidic events marking the period of mourning and spiritual reflection.

Other notable Hasidic leaders held significant religious ceremonies during this time: the Bobov 45 Rebbe conducted a Siyum HaShas with 144 young men in the Catskills; the Meknovka Belz community in Bnei Brak celebrated children completing the Five Books of Moses with public exams and blessings; and the Kapitshnitz Rebbe participated in a wedding for the grandson of the elder Rebbe of Rozhin in Bnei Brak.

Additional events included the Skulen Rebbe’s rest in Monticello, the Breslov chief rabbi attending a brit milah in Pinsk Karlin, and the Spinka Rebbe redeeming the firstborn son of several prominent Hasidic dynasties in his holy residence. The Satmar and Vizhnitz Rebbes were also noted for their spiritual activities during this period, including gatherings in Austria and London.

In Jerusalem, major Hasidic courts observed Tisha B'Av with prayers and lamentations, while the Biala Hasidim planned a special Shabbat of consolation at the Western Wall. The article also recounts various Hasidic stories and reflections related to the holiday and the historical destruction of the Temple.

These events collectively highlight the intense spiritual engagement and communal solidarity among Hasidic groups during the somber days of mourning and the hopeful anticipation of redemption.
