Israel Reopens Restored Circular Waterfall Trail in Nahal Ayun Nature Reserve After a Decade

A decade after being destroyed by a severe flood, the circular hiking trail descending from Gafni Lookout in the Nahal Ayun Nature Reserve in northern Israel has reopened to the public. The Israel Nature and Parks Authority completed extensive restoration work, allowing visitors once again to enjoy new viewpoints of the Tanur Waterfall and the Hula Valley. The trail had collapsed following an especially harsh winter about ten years ago, forcing hikers to return the same way from the lookout. The newly restored trail now offers a safe and scenic route, enhancing one of the Upper Galilee’s most popular hikes.

Gafni Lookout provides panoramic views of the Hula Valley, and the renewed trail features fresh perspectives of Tanur Waterfall, one of Israel’s most impressive waterfalls. The descent alongside the waterfall offers close contact with nature and excellent photo opportunities. Najee Rashash, the reserve’s manager, praised the dedicated team for rehabilitating the trail, calling the result "simply amazing" and inviting the public to experience this unique Israeli natural attraction.

Visitors can now choose from three hiking options: a long 2.5-kilometer route covering four waterfalls from Weiss Grove in Metula to Tanur Waterfall; the medium 1.5-kilometer circular trail with about 90 steps up to Gafni Lookout and 90 steps down, suitable for families but not accessible for strollers or people with mobility impairments; and a short, accessible 400-meter round trip from the Tanur Waterfall parking lot to the waterfall. The Nature and Parks Authority emphasized that reopening the trail expands hiking opportunities in the reserve, which itself recently reopened after a long closure due to the war. They reminded visitors to stay on marked paths, visit during operating hours, and bring water, hats, and appropriate gear, especially during hot summer days.
