Northern Israel's Hidden River Spots Offer Refreshing Summer Dips and Scenic Walks

After a long period of reduced tourism due to regional instability, northern Israel's streams and rivers in the Galilee are welcoming visitors again. Ben Frashitz, a 42-year-old experienced tour guide and manager of the Facebook group "The Guide to the North," who remained in the area during the conflict, recommends several accessible and scenic spots for cooling dips and nature walks. He notes that many trails remain overgrown and relatively empty, offering a peaceful experience.

One of the most accessible spots is a shaded corner of Nahal Ayun near Kfar Yuval, just ten seconds from the village cemetery. This shallow, family-friendly area is ideal for picnics and short stops, featuring a historic Turkish bridge and calm waters. Frashitz highlights that while popular sites like Banias and Hatzbani attract crowds, this quieter section of Nahal Ayun offers a refreshing alternative.

Another recommended location is Nahal Snir, where visitors can combine hiking with cold water dips. Starting from Gan HaTzafon commercial center near Highway 99, hikers can follow a clear path along the river to Banias and the popular Columbia Beach, known for its sandy shore and lively atmosphere, especially among local youth. For those seeking tranquility, a quieter riverside spot lies just five minutes north of Columbia Beach, accessible through a reed-lined path.

Frashitz also points out a hidden dip near the Banias spring, close to the Druze holy site Nabi Yehuda. This spot is easily missed but offers cool, shallow waters and shade, perfect for midweek visits. He warns that water levels in many streams have dropped due to recent dry winters, making it essential to check depth before jumping and to be cautious of exposed rocks.

For a unique experience, visitors can explore smaller tributaries of Nahal Dan, where several secluded spots with clear, cold water and even a Tarzan rope swing await. Frashitz advises arriving early or late to avoid crowds and emphasizes environmental responsibility by carrying out all trash.

Finally, the Galileo Winery in Kibbutz Dan offers a distinctive way to end a day of river dips. Guests can sit with their feet in the cold stream, enjoy a glass of rosé, and savor local cheeses. The winery produces about 6,000 bottles annually and is considered the northernmost winery in Israel.

Visitors should note that swimming in northern streams is unsupervised, and checking water quality updates from the Ministry of Health before visiting is recommended.
