Kings Kangwa, a key player for Hapoel Be'er Sheva and one of the most influential in the Israeli Premier League, is expected to miss the upcoming Champions League qualifier against his former club Red Star Belgrade due to his imminent transfer to Panathinaikos. Before joining Be'er Sheva, Kangwa was considered a disappointment at Red Star, but he has since developed into their most important player over the past two seasons. Red Star's avoidance of facing Kangwa in the next qualifying round is seen as a relief in Serbian media, as the club recently won 4-0 away against Northern Ireland's Larne in the second qualifying round.
The transfer is also widely covered in Greek media, which explains Panathinaikos' decision to sign Kangwa. Unlike AEK Athens, which is competing for a 10 million euro playoff spot and cannot field Kangwa in the Champions League group stage due to his prior appearances with Be'er Sheva, Panathinaikos is more focused on winning the Greek league than advancing in European competition. This strategic choice opened the door for Panathinaikos to acquire Kangwa, who is expected to strengthen their squad.
If Be'er Sheva advances past Vikingur, they will face Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League qualifiers, but Kangwa's transfer means he will likely miss this reunion with his former club. This development marks a significant moment for both Be'er Sheva and Red Star, as Kangwa's growth since leaving the Serbian club has been notable.
