Chaim Yavin, a pioneering figure in Israeli television and longtime news anchor, passed away at the age of 93 on Wednesday. Yavin was one of the founders of the Israeli Broadcasting Authority and became the iconic face of Israeli news, anchoring the "Mabat LaHadashot" news program for four decades from 1968 until his retirement in 2008. His funeral is scheduled for Friday at 11:00 AM at the Givat Shaul Cemetery.

Born in Germany in 1932, Yavin immigrated to Israel with his family in 1933, settling in Kiryat Ata. He left high school early to work but completed his education during his military service in the Navy and Nahal, later earning a degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Initially a radio presenter at Kol Israel, Yavin advanced to editor and producer before joining the team that launched Israeli television.

Yavin’s career-defining moment came in 1977 when he announced the historic election results that brought Menachem Begin and the Likud party to power, famously calling it a "turnaround." He also covered major national events, including the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995, delivering the news live despite the shock.

In 1997, Yavin received the Israel Prize for communications. His career also included directing documentaries and radio programs. However, in 1998, he faced criticism and an ethics ruling after broadcasting a sensitive family reaction without proper consent during a police report segment. In 2016, Yavin sparked controversy with remarks about sexual harassment, which led to public accusations against him, all of which he denied.

Yavin was married to Yossefa since 1967, with whom he had three children. His final broadcast was marked by live tributes from fellow news anchors across competing channels. Despite retiring from news anchoring, he continued producing documentaries and series until later years.
