Chaim Yavin, known as "Mr. Television" and one of Israel's most prominent media figures, passed away at the age of 93. His family announced the news with deep sorrow, noting he reached a venerable age. His funeral is scheduled for Friday at 11:00 AM at the Givat Shaul Cemetery. Yavin is survived by his wife Yossefa, sons Yonatan, Maiki, and Hagai, as well as grandchildren. His daughter, Dafna Yavin-Reches, a former lawyer and elementary school principal, died in October 2025 at age 54 after a serious illness.

Born Heinz Kluger in Germany in 1932, Yavin immigrated to Mandatory Palestine with his family in 1933 following the Nazi rise to power. He began his career at Kol Israel and was among the founding generation of Israeli television, which launched broadcasts in 1968. For over three decades, he anchored the "Mabat" news program, becoming a familiar voice during pivotal moments in Israeli history, including wars, military operations, elections, and diplomatic events.

Yavin is famously associated with the 1977 political "upheaval" when he announced the election results marking the Likud party's rise to power under Menachem Begin, ending decades of Labor dominance. In later years, he expanded his work to current affairs programs and documentaries, including the controversial series "Land of the Settlers," which critically examined Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank.

Known for openly expressing his political views, Yavin sometimes sparked debate but was widely recognized as a foundational figure in Israeli journalism. In 1997, he received the Israel Prize for communications in recognition of his long-standing contribution to public broadcasting and journalism. Though he appeared less frequently in recent years due to health issues, his name remains synonymous with the early days of Israeli television and the generation of broadcasters who became national institutions. His death marks the end of an era in Israeli media, with generations having grown up listening to his broadcasts through times of crisis, war, celebration, and historic decisions.
