Israeli police and the Tax Authority announced the arrest of current and former employees on suspicion of accepting bribes and enabling fraudulent tax refund claims totaling approximately 80 million shekels (around $22 million). The investigation, led by the National Fraud Investigation Unit (YAHAS) within Lahav 433 alongside tax investigators, uncovered a scheme spanning several years involving false tax refunds.
Following a transition from a covert to an overt investigation, officers raided the homes and offices of the suspects early Monday morning. Some of those arrested are scheduled to appear at the Ramla Magistrate's Court for detention extension hearings later the same day. The Tel Aviv District Attorney's Office for Taxation and Economics is overseeing the case.
Due to court-imposed gag orders, the identities of the suspects and further details of the investigation remain confidential. Authorities continue to probe the extent of the alleged corruption within the Tax Authority.
