Israeli police and tax authorities have arrested and detained several current and former employees of the Israel Tax Authority on suspicion of accepting bribes. The arrests followed a covert investigation conducted by the National Fraud Investigation Unit (Yahaha) of Lahav 433 and the Tax Authority's Central Investigations Unit. The suspects allegedly facilitated false tax refund claims totaling approximately 80 million shekels over several years in exchange for bribes.

The investigation transitioned to an open phase this Monday, prompting raids on the suspects' homes and offices. Several individuals were taken into custody for questioning, while others were detained for further investigation. Some of the arrested employees are expected to appear before the Ramla Magistrate's Court later today, where the police will request extensions of their detention as the inquiry progresses.

The Tel Aviv District Attorney's Office for Taxation and Economics is overseeing the case. A gag order has been imposed on certain details of the investigation to protect its integrity.
